About the pattern

This beginner-friendly pattern is worked from a straightforward rectangle folded in half and closed at the top and bottom. It uses half double crochet stitches worked in the back loop, creating a textured stitch.

Upcycle an old Christmas bauble and choose any yarn that complements your tree and interior. The pattern is versatile and can be adapted to any yarn and weight.

About the yarn

For this ornament I used Lion Brand DIY Glow, which is glow-in-the-dark yarn. It’s made of 100% polyester yarn in a classic worsted weight.

Light up the night with your show stealing creations and watch as they come alive in the darkness, leaving a trail of awe and wonder.

With hook size 4mm:

Row 2
ch 1, 1 sl st in first 2 sl st, 1 hdc blo in each hdc across, turn <15 (19) st>

Repeat row 2 & 3 consecutively until row 15 (21), repeat row 2 one more time. You now have a total of 16 (22) rows.

Ornament diameter 2.5″ / 6 cm:
The rectangle should measure approximately 2″ / 5.5 cm along the bottom and 6.5″ / 16.5 cm along the top.

Do not fasten off.

HDC Crochet Ornament made out of rectangle tutorial

Fold the rectangle in half. This will create a tube shape for your bauble.

Use your crochet hook to join the sides of the rectangle, working through both layers. Use slip stitches by inserting the hook into the back loop of the stitch and the front loop of the foundation stitch (or chain). Turn your work inside out.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail end to close the top later.

Closing the bottom and top

Close the bottom with a tapestry needle by threading the needle with the yarn and weaving it through the stitches. Pull tight to cinch the bottom closed. Go back and forth with the needle a few times to close the remaining gap. Secure the yarn with a knot, and weave in any loose ends.

Place the bauble inside and repeat the steps above to close the top.

Fasten off and weave in the ends.

End of pattern.
