About this design
When I first saw this extremely fluffy yarn, I knew my hat had to be a simple design as the yarn is quite challenging to work with. It’s hard to see the stitches and sometimes you need to feel rather than see where you need to insert your hook.
Therefor I decided to make a hat worked top-down. This way you don’t have to make increases or decreases. Can’t be easier! I decided to add a nice brim with different yarn and matching colors.
While working on my first hat, I accidentally made the hat too big. Instead of ripping it out and start over again, I used my hair tie to make the hat fit my head. And tadaa! All of a sudden I was wearing a hat with pom pom! With this pattern you can make a hat with pom pom without actually having to make a pom pom!
About this pattern
This pattern is available in three sizes: toddler, tween and adult. You can easily adjust the size by adding more stitches.
The body and pom pom are made with single crochet stitches. The brim is made with double crochet stitches and front post double crochet stitches to add some texture.
This hat is worked in continuous rounds, which means we continue working in the round without making chains and slip stitches.
About the yarn
For this hat you’ll need fluffy yarn and any left over yarn in a matching color. I used Katia Polar, a spongy yarn with soft downy surface. I only used about half of a ball to make this hat and some left over Katia Cotton Cashmere to make the brim. You can use any yarn for the brim, just dive in your yarn storage to find a color that matches the fluf!
I have to add a note about this yarn. With this yarn it can be hard to see the stitches, especially when making the chains and first row of single crochet stitches. After that, it becomes easier to see where you need to insert your hook. It took me three attempts before I got used to the yarn and was able to crochet without making mistakes. It might not be the best yarn for beginning crocheters!

I used a smaller hook and made a baby size between 6 and 12. Months. I would post a picture but don’t see how to do that, thanks for the cute pattern
Can I use a 4 ply worsted weight yarn for the brim? What size hook? Also, do you have a pattern for a faux fur vest?
Thank you
What a super way to make a Pom Pom! Yay I love it. Thanks for sharing.
I love this hat! Thanks for giving a brand we can use in the USA 🙂 I also love the other yarn you used on the brim…could you recommend another yarn for us here in the USA? Thanks for the pattern 🙂
We just got Katia Polar at Yarning Place in Melbourne Australia and this pattern is perfect for me to crochet a sample! Are you happy for me to direct people to you if they want the pattern? Also have you tried making a Pom Pom from the yarn (using a Pom Pom maker)?
Thanks Jane
I love this pattern and hat! Now I have to find a suitable alternative for Katia POLAR since I can’t get it here 🙁
Thank you!! If you live in the USA: http://shrsl.com/1geps
