About the pattern

Crocheting your own shoes is easy and fun with this pattern that works up quickly. The construction of the shoe is simple: we’ll start with the toe cap, continue with the shaft, rejoin for the heel, and finally, add faux fur for the finishing touches.

Botties® DIY soles

The Botties® DIY soles, designed by Isabelle and her startup team in Germany, have been on my radar for a while. We crossed paths at an event in 2023 and decided to collaborate.

Botties® are currently offered in two options: Original soles, ideal for outdoor use, and Basic soles, perfect for making indoor slippers. The soles are available in sizes ranging from kids 24 (EU) / 8 (US) up to adult size 46 (EU) / 13 (US).

About the yarn

I used Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Microbial Thick & Quick® Yarn, an ideal choice for winter shoes. This Thick & Quick version works up quickly, offers exceptional warmth, and the inclusion of amicor ensures enduring protection against odors, allergens, and bacteria.

Notes

  • This pattern is written in US terminology.
  • Pattern contains instructions for sizes XXS with size (XS, S, S+) (M, L, XL) in parentheses. When only one number is given, it applies to all sizes.
  • Use a tight tension. If the shoe feels too loose, use a smaller crochet hook.
  • These Botties® are designed to be used with 10mm felt insoles. This raises the foot slightly and provides good support.

Round 0

Notes

  • Use a small tapestry needle that fits through the holes and the special thread that comes with the kit.
  • The thread’s length should be approximately 10 times the circumference of the sole.
  • Fold the thread in half and work double stranded for extra firmness.
  • Be cautious not to make round 0 too tight; otherwise, it will be more challenging to insert a hook in round 1.
  • Watch my video tutorial for round 0.

Round 0

Use the special thread for round 0 and tie a knot at one end.

1. Hold the sole with the heel facing you and start in the top middle hole. Insert the needle from the back to front.

2. Move to the next lowest hole on the left. Insert the needle from the front to the back.

3. Move to the hole above and insert needle from the back to the front.

4. Draw the needle through the yarn loop and pull tight (but not too tight, you’ll need to be able to insert a crochet hook in round 1).

Repeat step 2, 3 and 4 until you reach the section with just one hole. Here you’ll continue as follows:

5. Insert needle from the back to the front.

6. Draw the needle through the yarn loop and pull tight.

Repeat step 5 and 6 until you’re back at the right side of the heel. Here you’ll repeat step 2, 3 and 4 again until you reach the center.

Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Short rows – left

Rejoin in the stitch with the stitch marker.

R19: sc2tog, 1 sc in next 6 st, 1 sl st in next 2 st R1, turn <7 sc>

R20: ch 1, skip 1 sl st, 1 sc in next 6 st, sc2tog, turn <7 sc>

R21: ch 1, sc2tog, 1 sc in next 5 st, 1 sl st in next 2 st R1, turn <6 sc>

R24: ch 1, skip 1 sl st, 1 sc in next 4 st, sc2tog <5 sc> Do not fasten off; we will continue with the shaft section.

Shaft

R1: ch 1, 6 sc evenly across sides of rows, 1 sc in 2 center stitches, 6 sc evenly across sides of rows, turn <14 sc>

R2: ch 1, 1 sc flo in each st across, turn <14 sc>

R3-R19: ch 1, 1 sc in each st across, turn <14 sc>

Do not fasten off yet.

Tips:

  • If you prefer a shorter version, work the shaft up to R13.
  • If you need more room for the lower leg, you can add increases in the first and last stitch of R4, R8, R12, and R16 (or as many as needed).
  • You can work the shaft up to R4 and continue with the heel section up to R11, then fit the shoe. This way, if your shoe is too tight, you can make the necessary increases as mentioned above without having to unravel your work.

Heel

R2: Pick up yarn from the right short row section and work 1 sc in each st across, 1 sc in the same st as last sl st of the left short row section, turn <20 (22, 20, 22) (24, 22, 24) sc>

R3-R26: ch 1, 1 sc in each st across, turn <20 (22, 20, 22) (24, 22, 24) sc>

End with a sl st in the first stitch of the shaft.

Pick up yarn from the shaft and finish with a sl st in the first stitch of the heel. Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Tips:

  • If you prefer a shorter version, work the heel up to R20.
  • After completing R10, attach the top of the Bottie sole to the yarn using thread and a tapestry needle.

Side seam

Seam up both sides with slip stitches. Start at the bottom and work your way up. Insert the hook in the right front loop first, and then the front loop of the stitch on the left. <25 sl st>

Faux fur details

Optionally, you can add faux fur details to the outside of your shoes.

Using a 6mm hook and Go For Faux yarn, rejoin in the stitch before the side seam and work sc in each stitch around. Continue working down along the side seam with a sl st in the next 10 side seam slip stitches, inserting the hook in the front loop only. Turn your work and go back up by working 10 sl st in the other remaining loops. Then, continue working sc in each stitch around, end with a sl st in the first stitch. Fasten off, weave ends.

For the second shoe, repeat the faux fur steps mentioned above, but on the opposite side.

Botties® labels

Finally, sew on the Botties labels wherever you want.
