Lovely heart hat

Here you can find my free crochet bun hat pattern of the Lovely heart hat. This hat features cute little hearts that slowly change from one color to the other, making it a great hat for Valentine’s Day. The pattern is quite simple: all you need to know are single crochet stitches and how to make color changes.

About this hat

The pattern is designed for an adult size, but you can easily adapt the hat to other sizes as well. If you want to make a children’s version, you just need to make less single crochet stitches than stated in the pattern.

We will use a special technique for the color changes: work with both colors at the same time and crochet over the color that we don’t need. This way there are almost no ends to weave in, yay!

Knit stitch version

This hat can also be made with the ‘knit stitch’, which gives the hat a very nice effect and makes it look like a knitted hat. The knit stitch version takes more time and a bit more yarn, but really looks beautiful – some people say it looks better! The normal version with single crochet stitches, which you can find below, is easier and faster and might be more suitable for people who want to sell these hats. Click here for my lovely heart bun hat knit stitch version.

Notes

– The hat is worked bottom-up

– The hat is worked in joined rounds (vs. continuous rounds).

– I worked the first stitch in the same stitch as the slip stitch. I did not use chains at the beginning of a row, but you are free to do this if this is your method.

– The rows where I made hearts, I carried the other yarn color across and crocheted over it.

Video

I’ve made a video tutorial explaining how to make the Lovely heart bun hat.

Pattern

Ribbing
The rib is worked in rows: we turn our work at the end of every row.

Use grey yarn
R1: chain 9

R2: skip first 2ch, 7hdc, ch 2 (7)

R3-R41: 1hdc, 5hdc in back loops only, 1hdc, chain 2 (7)

You have now made 40 rows of hdc. Measure the rib around your head, because the size can differ depending on which yarn you use. If you need a longer or shorter rib, work in an even amount.
Hold both ends together and sitch them together with slip stitches in the back loops only.

The ‘heart’ part
Each row of the rib counts as 1 stitch. For example, 40 rows are 40 stitches.
The pattern will now be worked in rounds. I close every round with a slip stitch in the first stitch of the round. The first stitch is made in the same stitch as the chain. I did not use chains for the first stitch. I started with grey yarn. A pink heart is made by starting the sc with pink yarn and finishing it off with grey yarn. So yarn over and pull up a pink loop, yarn over and pull through with grey.

R1: *1sc, 2sc in 1sc* around (60)
Note: This means you make one normal single crochet and in the next stitch you make 2 single crochet stitches in one stitch). This way you’ll end up with 60 stitches

R2: 60hdc (6)

R3: *3 grey sc, 1 pink sc* around (60)

R4: grey HDC around (60)

R5: 2 grey sc (to start in the middle), *1 pink sc, 3 grey sc* around, 1 grey sc

R6: grey HDC around (60)

R7: 1 grey sc (to start in the middle), *1 pink sc, 3 grey sc* around, 1 pink sc, 2 grey sc (60)

R8: *1 pink sc, 1 grey sc* around (60)

R9: *1 grey sc, 1 pink sc* around (60)

R10: *1 pink sc, 1 grey sc* around (60)

Now change yarn, pink will now be the ‘main’ color, grey will only be used for making hearts

R11: *1 grey sc, 1 pink sc* around (60)

R12: *3 pink sc, 1grey sc* around (60)

— now is the time you have to decide whether you want a normal hat or bun hat version! —

Normal hat

R13: pink HDC around (60)

R14: 2 pink sc, *1 grey sc, 3 pink sc*, 1 pink sc (60)

R15: *1 HDC, DEC* (40)

R16: *1 grey sc, 7 pink sc* around (40)

R17: *DEC* around (20)

Fasten off and leave a long end for sewing. Use a tapestry needle and weave yarn through loops of the last round. Pull tightly. Add a pom pom to hide the remaining gap.

And that’s it! Hopefully this lovely crochet bun hat will keep you warm this winter.

Bun hat version

The bun hat version is basically the same as the normal hat. However, I noticed that sometimes this version is a bit too long for a bun hat, so I skipped a few rounds. Everything is the same until row 12, from here you do the following:

R13: *1 HDC, dec* (40)

R14: *1 grey sc, 7 pink sc* around (40)

R15: *DEC* around (20)

R16: If you want the hole smaller: one more round of HDC DEC around (10)

Fasten off and weave in ends.

  1. I made a hat for my daughter which she loves! I’m now attempting to make a matching scarf and having a little trouble. Any suggestions?

  2. Can you tell me what size hook you used? And the yarn so I can find comparable?
Or perhaps just sizing for a gauge swatch so I can figure out what to use with my hard/hook.
    Thank you!

  3. Hi Wilma
I wonder if there is a way to make a messy bun beanie out of this beautiful hat. Mind to give me instructions or make a video please?
Also, can you suscribe me to receive your news by email please?

  4. I made one using Red Heart Super Saver white and red. It’s beautiful, but a little too big. Do you suggest going down a hook size or cutting out some rows?
