Lovely Luisa Shawl

I am excited to share my new free crochet shawl pattern: the Lovely Luisa Shawl. This shawl has a beautiful texture created by the combination of two simple crochet stitches. The border is made out of little hearts. It is the third design in my new series of patterns dedicated to my extended family (people with the same condition as me).

About Luisa

The Lovely Luisa Shawl is dedicated to dear Luisa, a four year old girl from Brazil. She’s the proud big sister of 2 year old Thais and together with their parents they live in Sao Paulo.

Luisa is a real entertainer: she likes singing, dancing and acting. Later she will be an actress ;). Oh, and she’s a big fan of Frozen – just like me ghehe.

She reminds me of myself and I can’t wait to meet her and her family one day! I am going to try to visit her in Brazil next year (if I can find some affordable plane tickets ghehe).

About the design

When I think of lovely Luisa, I think of girly things, the color pink and hearts. I decided to make a textured shawl with a playful border made out of hearts, a bit like my pom pom happiness shawl which has a border with pom poms.

I used a gradient yarn cake with the colors green, yellow and pink: green and yellow based on Brazil’s national flag and pink for a girly touch with pink hearts.

The basis of the shawl is very simple. The entire shawl is a repeat of only 3 rows. To create some beautiful details and texture, I combined double crochet stitches with a special stitch that is similar to the spike stitch. Every 4 rows the two stitches are alternated.

About this series of patterns

I was born with a (benign) tumor in my face. For more than 22 years my doctors did not know what it was exactly. In 2017 I did a second opinion and got diagnosed with an ultra rare condition. I immediately started searching for other people with this condition.

So far I have found about 20 people in the whole wide world. It’s amazing how many similarities we have and how much we look alike. I feel very grateful they came into my life.

Many of my upcoming patterns, including this one, will be special designs inspired by my new ‘extended family’ who have made a huge impact on me.

I don’t want to be nosy but what kind of tumor do you have? I have a disorder that causes tumors to grow inside and outside my body.

I’ve got a 3 play cake…would that work? Should I go down a hook size?

Yes, 3-ply will work too. I think a smaller hook is better if the yarn is thinner. Try 3.5mm for the shawl and 3mm for the border!

Hi Stacy, I put a link to the shop that sells similar yarn cakes with the same length. A caron cake is very different, it’s worsted yarn, less yardage and not gradient. Here you can find some more examples of gradient yarn cakes: https://wilmade.com/gradient-yarn-cakes-where-can-i-buy-them/ – if you want to use lionbrand or redheart, you will need 2 because they are only 437 yds!
