About the design

This design was made by my mom. She wanted to make a simple poncho to keep her warm while crocheting. She played with some simple stitches and voila, a quick and simple poncho crochet pattern was created!

The poncho starts with a very closed stitch to keep your neck and shoulders warm. After every 10 rows we change to a more lacy stitch which creates bigger chain spaces. Even with wider spaces the poncho is unbelievable warm and this way you get a comfortable drape. The pattern has 30 rows in total.

Fun fact: it’s such quick project, that as soon as my mom finished her poncho, she made a bunch more for my grannies and some of her friends. That’s why we gave this design the name ‘Perfect Gift Poncho’. Below you can find some pictures of me, my mom and my granny with the ponchos my mom made.

  1. How would I adjust this pattern to fit an 8 year old? I was going to make one for her mother and one for her?
    It is lovely!

    Thanks

    1. I would measure the distance between her 2 shoulders and start with a chain that is double this length.
From there, continue in same pattern. After 2-3 rows try it on her to ensure the head goes through easily.
If the neck opening ends up too large, you can always sew a bit on each side to make it smaller.

  2. Did someone try it with a yarn no4, worsted weight ? I don’t have much #5 in my stash. I could just adjust to fit the size, repeating more, but I was curious about the result, if it looks as nice. I have a few Caron Cakes (#4), but also Caron Tea Cakes (#6), maybe it would be better with a greater size than a smaller ? Again adjusting for gauge size, of course. Any idea is welcome ! It’s for a gift to my son’s teacher, I can see her wearing this <3

  3. I am loving this poncho. A perfect, quick project for a cozy day inside. Works up very quickly! This is my new go-to gift. Thank you so much for making a video and the written directions.

  4. Hi. I love this pattern. My question is, when I work up the first 11 rows, it does not sit on my shoulders like the picture shows it sits more like a scarf. Does it lay flat after the project is finished?

      1. Hi Ladies! I’ve made already 3 of the poncho dress, but the top is the same in both – yes, it does “sit” nicely after the whole piece is done as the weight pulls it down a bit. Hope that helps!

  5. I love this pattern! My niece is turning 4 and she picked out some yarn and asked me to make her something. I made this poncho. I modified it, chain 55. She’s going to live it! Thank you.

  6. I am only 4′ 11″ and a size 6, so I know this poncho would be WAY too large for me. I want to make this but have to figure out how to adjust this pattern. Could you help? What is the number of chains for one multiple and how many chains are needed to add at the very end. If you could help me with that, I can go from there. Thank you! Hope I explained myself clearly enough. I lovc this and also love the dress pattern. Thank you for sharing these patterns.

  7. Hi Wilma! You are all lovely ladies and the poncho fits you all beautifully. The colors are gorgeous too.

Tell your Mom I have been searching for THE perfect poncho and her beautiful pattern is THE WINNER! I was in the process of one that I was hoping would be ok but I KNOW this one is a winner!

I guess you can tell I am excited! If not,let me tell you, I AM EXITED OVER THIS PATTERN!

I have not crocheted in 30+ years so I need some thing IDIOT-PROOF! or I would have quit. This will work for mom, step-mom, sisters, step-sisters, church sisters, sisters-in-law, cousins, daughter/play daughters, nieces, and the list goes on!

I found you by “accident” (that’s when you’re not thinking about God but He’s guiding you anyway) but I am on your list and in your Facebook group now! I look forward to seeing and crocheting more of your/your families beautiful creations.. God bless!

  8. This is such a cool pattern! Tell your mom, “Awesome job!”

I had a quick question though before I began. Approximately how much of the second skein do you use? I have a single skein of scarfie I want to use and would adjust the pattern slightly if you didn’t use a lot of it. Thanks!

  9. Hey Wilma,
Wat een leuke poncho. Ik vind poncho’s wel leuk om te haken, maar ik draag ze eigenlijk bijna nooit haha. Echt heel erg mooi heb je die gemaakt, misschien dat ik er nog een poncho bij ga haken. haha.
    Fijne zondag.

    Lieve groetjes,
    Emily
