We’re going to the USA for a few months!

2018 is going to be an exciting year with many changes I am looking forward to. Also regarding traveling. After months of preparations I can finally share our plans: Koen (my boyfriend) and I are going to the United States for a few months! We will fly in tomorrow (Thursday) and return somewhere in April. I can’t wait to shop daily at amazing craft stores like Michael’s, JOANN and Hobby Lobby. A promising start of the new year!

We’re going to the United States for both work and travel. The Dutch company Koen works for has an office in Maryland, USA and encourages exchange between the two locations. It has always been a dream of mine to stay in America for a while and Koen really likes the idea of going abroad too. Also, it’s the perfect moment to do it now, as I started working for myself and easily can go with him.

LoveCrochet cocktail party

Our USA trip starts with 10 days of traveling through New York. The first few days are so exciting! Thursday evening I’m going to LoveCrochet’s cocktail party where I will meet many other American / Canadian crochet bloggers, including Stephanie from AllAboutAmi who I really admire. I’m so excited I get the chance to meet her and the other talented crochet bloggers during my trip to New York!

Vogue Knitting Live

That’s not all! Saturday I will attend Vogue Knitting Live, a 3-day event in New York with knit-couture fashion shows and knit art galleries. Even though I’m totally into crochet (never tried knitting before!) it’s the place to be for crafters. The day will be filled with yarn, inspiration and meeting fellow crafters (both crocheters and knitters). And maybe, just maybe, I will even try a bit of knitting myself at the ‘Beginners Lounge’.

Subway Yarn Storm

Wait, there’s more! Saturday morning I will join the Subway Yarn Storm. The idea is that a big group of people comes together and creates an experience for unknowing people. Such as a flashmob. We’re going to do the Subway Yarn Storm with many crafters who are going to Vogue Knitting Live. It’s going to be so much fun and I will make sure to get some fun footage to share with you afterwards!

Weekend trips

After 10 days of traveling – you can see our plans below – we will stay in Maryland for a while (close to Washington D.C.). We will make good use of our free time in the States and have planned a lot of weekend trips. Trips to Washington D.C., Richmond, Baltimore, Charlottesville and Philadelphia are already on the schedule. Also, the last 2 weeks of our trip we will go on a big tour again. We haven’t planned a destination yet as we’re hoping to find some cheap flight deals. Fingers crossed for a good price to Hawaii!

  1. Wilma, I stumbled upon your pattern and video for a bracelet on Pinterest. I immediately subscribed and visited your website. I enjoyed reading of your American travels. Sorry for the cold weather you had. I came to crochet rather late in life, but love working with different yarn types. Thanks for the freebies. You are very talented.

  2. The next time that you come to the USA during winter months, it would be lovely to visit the southwestern states. I live in Tucson, Arizona where our winters are sunny with days in the 70-75 degrees Fahrenheit range. The Sonoran desert is a beautiful place that is unlike any other, and, to me, is heaven on earth.

  3. Hello Wilma, I am hooked on crochet and I’ve been trying to find a simple crochet heart pattern and that is how I stumbled across your blog, I love it and thanks so much for the free never ending shawl pattern -I’ve been looking for something similar for a long time. I’ve submitted my email address and look forward to many lovely crochet patterns and ideas. Can you recommend a heart pattern? And I’d love to have the pattern for the small USA flag. Hope you enjoyed your trip to the U.S. you weren’t here during the best travel for weather, hope that didn’t diminish your enjoyment too much.

    1. So glad you found my blog, thanks for visiting me! And thank you for the encouraging words! Are you looking for a heart pillow pattern? Or a small one, e.g. to make a keychain? Flat or amigurumi? Ah yes the American heart flag, I made that one about a year ago. I will see if I can find my notes on how to make them and turn it into a pattern!

I love the USA! The weather is way too cold for me but I was well prepared and wore 4 layers including a ski jacket 🙂 It’s slowly getting warmer now, yay!

  4. This is so exciting! To be so young and be able to have and accomplish some of your dreams. And, as an extra bonus…..to be doing it with your partner! May God be with you and give you many blessings!
