This Is Me Shawl

This Is Me Shawl, a new free triangle shawl pattern inspired by… myself! This design is part of my new series of patterns dedicated to my extended family (people with the same condition as me).

For this design I used my favorite type of yarn, which is a fingering weight yarn cake with beautiful gradient colors. I wanted to create a simple but elegant shawl that goes with every outfit. As always, I tried to make the pattern as simple as possible by making simple repeats. You only need to repeat 10 rows which are all very simple.

About the design

I wanted to make a triangle shawl, because that’s currently my favorite shawl shape. I also wanted the shawl to be elegant and wide, so I can wear it with most of my outfits.

The shawl is mainly made with double crochet stitches, but also includes chains and even one row of single crochet stitches. To create a ribbed effect, some rows are made with front post double crochet stitches.

The texture from the ribbed rows are combined with rows that have different stitches and chain spaces, which creates a nice effect and beautiful details.

I chose the colors pink and grey, because it gives a feminine touch and I just love to work with pink yarn.

About the pattern

As mentioned above, I wanted to create an elegant shawl. At the same time I aimed for a beginner-friendly pattern that’s suitable for beginners who don’t have that much experience yet. I think it worked out great, because the shawl looks beautiful and the pattern is quite simple.

There are only 10 rows that need to be repeated; 6 rows are made out of simple (front post) double crochet stitches, and 4 rows involve some fun stitches and chain work. That’s all!

With left over yarn you can make three matching tassels to add to the ends of the shawl. Personally I think this gives the shawl a final touch.

About this special series of patterns

I was born with a (benign) tumor in my face. For more than 22 years my doctors did not know what it was exactly. In 2017 I did a second opinion and got diagnosed with an ultra rare condition. I immediately started searching for other people with this condition.

So far I have found about 20 people in the whole wide world. It’s amazing how many similarities we have and how much we look alike. I feel very grateful they came into my life.

Many of my upcoming patterns, including this one, will be special designs inspired by my new ‘extended family’ who have made a huge impact on me.

Tassels

Tassels are easy and fun to make. Personally I think this gives the shawl a final touch.

1. Wrap the yarn around your hand until you find it thick enough. With fingering weight yarn 45 times should be enough. Cut two more strands which are about 40 cm / 16″.

2. Fold one strand around one of the two ends. Tie a tight knot.

3. Cut the yarn on the bottom (opposite of your knot)

4. Fold the other strand around the top of your tassel, about 1 cm from the top knot. Secure tight.

5. Trim the bottom

  4. Hi, how many yards does this shawl take? I have Twirls Shadows that has about 875 yards–the Bubbles used has 1040, so I’m wondering if it can be made with 1 skein of the Shadows.

  5. Can this be adapted to a rectangular shawl? i like those… Or do you have similar patterns in rectangular shawls? thanks.

  10. The combination video, written pattern and the number of stitches documented for each row was very helpful in crocheting this shawl. Normally, I don’t count stitches, because I’m so confident of my stitching, but you have to count the stitches in this pattern in order to stay on point. I can’t wait until the shawl is completed. I’m using Red Heart Croquette yarn. G-hook.

    1. Thank you for the pattern. Usually don’t count stitches, but found that it works best if you do on this! I’m making prayer shawls right now, so may friends and love ones are in need. I’m hoping this one will be nice and elegant for those trips. For treatment. I’m. Thinking they will also be warm. God bless Jane
