Tulip Square Bum Bag

About the pattern
The bag consists of 4 small squares that are joined together using your preferred method. This pattern uses an invisible slip stitch technique, but you can also use the visible slip stitch join, which creates a textured ribbing.
Fabric lining and zipper
My video tutorial shows you how to add fabric lining and a zipper by hand if you don’t have a sewing machine.
Straps
The pattern includes instructions for a crocheted strap; alternatively, you can use a matching pre-made strap from Amazon, like the ones shown here.

About the yarn
For this Granny Square Bum Bag I used Lion Brand DIY Glow, which is glow-in-the-dark yarn. It’s made of 100% polyester yarn in a classic worsted weight.

Notes
- This pattern is written in US terminology.
- The bag is made up of 4 squares. 2 rounds of puff stitches and dc stitches are worked around the top to add some height. The strap is created by re-attaching yarn to both sides of the bag. The fabric lining and zipper are hand-sewn, but you can also use a sewing machine if you have one.
- The bag’s dimensions can be easily adapted by either adding or subtracting rounds, resulting in larger or smaller squares. Alternatively, using a larger crochet hook will lead to slightly bigger squares and, consequently, a larger bag.

Assembly
Arrange all granny squares as indicated by the photos below, with the wrong sides facing upwards.
Slip stitch everything together using a loose tension.
Tip for slip stitching: insert your hook in the front loop of the square on top and the back loop of the square below. You can find a tutorial here.
To achieve a smoother finish, you can steam block the granny squares.

2 extra rounds
We’ll add 2 rounds around the top to add extra height.
Rejoin yarn into one of the square corners on the front.
Round 1:
(1 puff, ch 1) into each ch-1 sp around, sl st in first puff <40 puff>
Round 2:
ch 3 (counts as your first dc), *2 dc in next ch-sp, 1 puff in next dc* repeat around, 2 dc in last ch-sp, sl st in 3rd ch <120 dc>
Fasten off, weave in ends.

Straps
- The strap is worked separately on both sides of the bag and then joined in the middle using slip stitches.
- Tip: Use the Stacked Single Crochet technique to replace the first dc. You can find a tutorial here.
Locate the 5 center stitches on the side of the bag and rejoin the yarn at the 5th stitch.
Row 1:
1 dc in first st, skip 1 st, (1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc) in next st, skip 1 st, 1 dc in last st, turn <1 v-st>
Row 2:
1 dc in first st, ch 1, 1 puff in v-st, ch 1, 1 dc in last st, turn <1 puff>
Row 3:
1 sc in first st, 1 sc in ch-sp, 1 sc in puff, 1 sc in ch-sp, 1 sc in last st, turn <5 sc>
Row 4:
1 sc in each st across, turn <5 sc>
Continue repeating rows 1, 2, 3, and 4 consecutively until you reach row 44. Then, repeat rows 1, 2, and 3 once more. The strap should measure around 16″ / 40.5 cm.
Fasten off.

Repeat all steps above on the other side of the bag.
Join the straps together using slip stitches.
Fasten off, weave in ends.
Fabric lining
Optionally, you can add a fabric lining to the bag. I cut a piece of white fabric and sewed it onto the bag using a needle and thread. You can also use an old t-shirt.
A video tutorial can be found here.

Zipper
With this type of bag, it’s highly recommended to add a zipper so your essentials won’t fall out. I used DIY Glow yarn to sew the zipper onto the bag, but you can also use sewing thread.
A video tutorial can be found here.

End of pattern.
